Electric scooters may not be around for long…

Electric scooters have been one of the biggest tech crazes of the last year, with venture capitalists pouring more than $1 billion into the startups. But the fundamental numbers don’t add up because the scooters don’t bring in enough money to cover their costs. If the business continues on its current path, the scooter hype might be short-lived.

No mention on what breaks on them. I really doubt it's the batteries for example which is a huge cost. Some stopped having the scooters foldable so maybe that mechanism failed on some and, no, removing that mechanism does not make the scooter more expensive. I bet the motor is also a culprit. Also no mention of repairing the scooters. I mean if it's just swapping the motor then it's not that bad.

A perfect example of why communism has always failed, people don't take care of things they have no ownership of. It's just human nature and isn't going to change anytime soon. I also think it's quite amusing that these things have been touted as an environmentally friendly alternative to driving but if you have to replace them every month you'd honestly do far less damage to the environment by just driving the same car for 15 years.

I live in a city that has been initiated by those dam things, we have 14k plus of the things. LITTERED all over the place. Do EVERYTHING in your power to keep them OUT of your city, they are a pain in the a$$ royally. In the streets, all over the sidewalks, in parks and even on greenways which are miles from downtown (which is where they are supposed to be) Just left because they are dead and that's where they died.

I mean this is the 1000th lesson that introducing novel concepts like that in the USA does not work, because the people are destructive morons. You would be hard pressed to find such idiots in Japan or Europe where people would intentionally try to destroy something that does not belong to them and help you be mobile, except in the United States where that seems to be their favorite past time. I mean as said, it's not the first time this happened and it wont be the last, let them live in the stone age, and move to greened pastures and countries where people appreciate things like that.

On the flip side you can sell the customer data. Where X, Y or Z customer travels. Where he lives etc... On the other side, you need to factor in the cost of changing the batteries or charging them. Repairing scooters, theft, vandalism etc... And all the other stuff that costs money in a company.
Tennouseijin 20 घंटे पहले
It seems like there are a few simple solutions to begin with: 1. Someone intentionally breaks scooters, or uses them the wrong way? Make them pay. Those people who threw scooters in the lake? If they're made to pay for the vandalism, then the scooter renting company will not be losing money because of vandalism. I mean, it should be obvious - those people who cause damage should pay for damage. Of course this is easier said than done, but if riding/leaving rented scooters is only allowed in monitored areas, well lit at night etc., this should be doable. 2. Increase the price of using a scooter. This might mean fewer customers, but it'll also mean fewer scooters will be needed, and thus all the operational costs will be down as well. Say the price of using a scooter is doubled. Number of customers drops five times. Operational costs drop five times, but revenue ends up 2/5 of the old one. With the right numbers, this would become profitable. 3. Recycling & repair. When a scooter becomes too damaged it should be salvaged for parts. Making a new scooter out of parts of damaged scooters SHOULD be cheaper than making one from scratch with raw materials. Of course the other solution it to simply sell scooters. Once it is the user's property, they'll care for it more. One problem with scooter ownership is securing it from theft, so it would be nice if there were dedicated storage lockers or something where people could 'park' their scooters near shopping centers, universities, office buildings etc. because at this time, the only safe-ish option is to store scooters indoors. Chain locks, alarms, GPS trackers... can deter some thieves, but a well equipped, professional thief can still get any scooter kept outdoors in a matter of minutes or seconds. Of course if the scooter is cheap, thieves may not be interested, but for people willing to buy a $1000 electric scooter? The threat is real. Also, most security devices (chains, locks, GPS trackers) won't prevent a thief from stealing the battery, which is often the most expensive part of scooters.
BloodyIron 21 घंटे पहले
The supposition that each scooter should be treated as one unit is part of the fallacy that is the measurement of their lifespan. I don't believe that every part on them magically fail at the same time. What is a failure? Is it a broken tire? Bad battery? Broken shaft? Replace the parts that fail, instead of replacing the whole unit. This will substantially, positively, impact the lifespan and recouped cost of each unit. And honestly, I'm disappointed in The Verge that we didn't even touch on repairs whatsoever here. Come on guys, I expected more from you.

In short, capitalism is shortsighted and investors are stupid. Unfortunately investors are what makes the world go round right now but anyone and everyone that invests is absolutely moronic. This business is wasteful, immoral, and cumbersome to the cities that feature scooter sharing. Its clearly a bad investment, but people still insist on having money fights over the idea. No one is actually considering the implications for the future. Man kind is going to start to run out of metal in a century or two. our great grandchildren will see these piles of junk and wasted metal that we left for them and then piss on our graves... and we deserve it...

+Bartlomiej Milewski another way to look at it is: Did you know that pure aluminum was so rare hundreds of years ago that monarchs would make crowns out of the element. Abundance hasn't changed at all since then, methods for extracting it has. There is no way to extract it from everywhere efficiently. We are causing an accelerated entropy of all metals. So, hopefully our descendants figure out substitutes. Otherwise they will have to sweep the streets for metal.
F3RAL manchild
F3RAL manchild 14 घंटे पहले
+Bartlomiej Milewski lucky for you i happen to have a degree in geophysics... so, yeah... 8-9% of earth's crust is aluminum. Most of earths crust is oxygen and silicon... but abundance has nothing to do with usability. If we mine it and spread it out across earths crust (like we have been) it wont change the composition of earths crust but it will slowly oxidize and essentially become dust. This dust will be next to impossible to mine because it will be such low yield and will be so spread out that its just impractical. Thats just aluminum. Im more worried about the copper and gold in the circuits. Copper and gold will run out first, then iron, etc... our great grandchildren will have no recourses left.

I think the salvage value should also be factored into the calculation - in the accounting basis, every company that purchases an asset (machine, motor vehicle, big printing press etc) all have a bottom rake salvage value. For example, the scooter costs 551 @ purchase price --> salvage value at 50 dollars (parting it out or selling to refurbisher) = 500 dollar purchase price
