Ok Stat time. In 28 Regular games they played against each other from Nov. 11, 1984 to Mar. 11, 1992 the Celtics won 17 and the Bulls won 11. But that's heavily tilted in favor of the Celtics in the early years when they were unstoppable and in the later years for Chicago when the Celtics were just plain old and the Bulls were starting their title runs. But that's not really the point anyway. In those games Bird went 26.9 ppg, 8.6 rpg, 6.4 apg, 1.4 spg, .9 bpg and Jordan was 32.8 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 5.7 apg, 2.8 spg, 1.1 bpg. In six playoff games in 1986 and 1987 the Celtics won all six games but the story is pretty much the same, Larry did everything well, Jordan scored more points and had more steals. I would say overall it just proves what someone would generally think. Nobody could touch Jordan in scoring. Larry was better in rebounding naturally. Although interestingly he had noticeably less rebounds against the Bulls than other teams. I'm sure there's a reason. They were probably roughly equal in passing/distributing the ball. Bird was underrated defensively, but wasn't in Jordan's league. The thing to keep in mind with these stats is Bird was a shadow of his former self for at least a third of them, although I don't think it would change the conclusion, which is that they were both hella good basketball players.

These arguments are usually silly since most people commentating are ignorant of what it means to be the best in their sport. For example, overall, I think Bird is greater than MJ but MJ was the flashier player. I would say both Jordan and Bird are in the top ten best all time along with Magic, Kareem, and Kobe. The best though is Drazen Petrovic. He is the Mozart Of bball and literally scored the most against the dream team by himself. If he didn't tragically die, Petrovic would be a God of basketball.

I think the ultimate question could easily be asked “how did anyone do against Michael Jordan”. Pretty sure the answer will always be the same. I know there are few clips of a few players that may have done well against the GOAT once or twice (Honestly that is the worst thing you could do). The man did not need any more motivation, but if you were lucky enough to have a good night against him you would eventually pay. That said, Larry, Magic, and all the other GREATS were and always will be AWESOME! Dr. J. and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar have to be mentioned, but game after game night after night no one even comes close (in my opinion) to the machine that is Michael Jordan. I’m pretty sure the testimonies in this video as well as many others will confirm this. I love the videos keep them coming but fuck the questions they all have been answered. #Please

Larry Bird was the best basketball player in the 80's I don't care what anyone says. If only he could have had a few more great years he would have been the best

The stats for Bird against Jordan are not telling enough because those include Bird from 89-92 which was him pretty much playing injured all the time. Bird stats before injuries where arcade like and from 79 to 88 just a pure beast! Jordan was the best individual player ever while Bird was the greatest team player ever. Both legend would make today's players look like chumps!

I despise Jordan with every fiber of my being. I only hate the Patriots and Brady more, and that's saying something. Hate, hate, hate Jordan. Always have, going back to his rookie season, and always will. Magic and Kareem are my two favorite players of all time. I hated Bird back in the day with the Magic and Lakers rivalry, but I at least respected him. Jordan was all "look at me, look at me," took all the shots himself in the early part of his career. Selfish player, didn't make his teammates better around him, like Magic and Bird did. Was totally OK being a selfish ball hog and not winning championships because of it. It was only the addition of Pippen that mandated Jordan actually give up the shot, and only then did the Bulls, not Jordan start winning championships as a team. Best game of Jordans career, he scored a bunch of points. Best game of Magic's career, he played all five positions, stuffed the Stat sheet, not just points, and helped his team win the NBA championship as a ROOKIE.

I hated Bird. I hated Jordan. I liked the Bad Boy Pistons. I've kind of lost interest in sports (at least current sports), so I haven't seen an NBA game in over 10 years, but I do enjoy these kinds of videos about players of yesteryear.

how do you compare Jordan was at the beginning of his career bird was middle to near end of his career I think the teams were more competitive with each other in the bird years Lakers, Philly, Houston , Detroit, those were some nasty teams I can't remember Jordan and the bulls having difficult competition except for Utah Jazz as the Celtics .

My Favourite players are MJ, D-Rose, Bird and Shaq. I think MJ is the best ever and i dont see that ever changing. Larry over Magic/LeChina/Barkley/Curry/Durrant in my eyes. I'd put Bill Russel as the 2nd best player ever. Hes was on the most stacked team but they were good then got him and won 11 out of 13 titles. If hes that dominate in his day when no one ells was even doing what he was doing and he was consider maybe the most athletic player ever for a long time, then he would have probably been very good in any era considering how many bad players play 10 years in the NBA.

The best scoring small forward was blackballed during his prime Connie Hawkins and as for the best all around player Wilt the Stilt Chamberlain could drive the ball up the court like a point guard pass the ball like Magic score like Jordan his teammates weren't talented bird was always surrounded with talent not once did bird carry a team with no talent to a championship

Great video about two of the best to ever play the game. Arguing about GOATs can be entertaining, but why people take it seriously...probably because everyone wants to see the best during their peak interest years. Well, I watched Magic and Bird in their primes, and I'm still watching the sport. Jordan was the best combination of offense and defense I've ever seen. Bird was an uncanny shooter and a great facilitator/motivator. I'm honestly not sure which I'd take to start a team. Flip a coin and add Magic into the mix. Until James he was probably the best all around big man, someone who could play any position on the floor at an all-star level. I'll wait on ranking James and his contemporaries with the old guard until they're done. Never try to rank a guy while he's still playing. He's either not going to get enough credit from the "You should have seen the other guy!" crowd or too much credit from the current fans who often never did and are invested in the present to the exclusion of the past.

I’m pretty sure that Jordan met bird in the playoffs twice and he losses eight times in a row he never won a game in the playoffs against the Celtics if I’m not mistaken

As Isiah Thomas put it, in the 80's the Bulls were finishing 3rd & 4th in the division during those times. Celtics, Pistons, Hawks, Bucks, and 76ers had some good teams back then. Definitely miss when the talent was widespread & not limited to 2 or 3 teams like it is today.

The most misleading stat in basketball is points scored. It should be points scored minus points given up on defense. Take harden for example, what’s the point of scoring 30 but your own defense allows 32. Youre -2 on the points category.

This isn't really a fair comparison. Bird was in his prime. He was a stud, obviously. Jordan was a a really good young player, but he was young and still developing into the absolute phenom that he became in the 90's.

Michael Jordan didn't get that top hero's attention until the 90's, after Larry Bird retired. The Chicago Bulls won soo many championships in the 90's, like the Boston Celtics won in the 80's.

Bird was a bad excuse of what he was in his prime when Jordan was in his prime. It would have been a GREAT match up of Bird in his prime vs Jordan in his prime. Both were surrounded by tremendous talent. The Celtics would beat the Bulls a majority of the time I would think. As for which was the GOAT I would go with Jordan. Jordan was possibly the greatest defensive players ever in an era when basketball was physical. No offense to Chamberlain but the game wasn’t physical prior to the Laker/Celtic era and quit being physical after the Bulls era. Don’t watch it anymore. Boring would rather watch baseball.

This video is based on a stupid question. First of all, basketball is a team sport, last time I checked. It's not how Jordan did against Bird, it's how the Bulls did against the Celtics. And most of the matchups between them came when the Celtics were at the height of their dominance, while the Bulls were only in the playoffs because they had Jordan (but weren't so great as a team). As the Bulls got better, Larry's back got worse. By the early 90's, when the Bulls were championship contenders (and eventual champs), Larry still had the heart, but his body was gradually letting him down. Meanwhile, Jordan was only JUST coming into his prime. Sure, they played each other. But they were never in their respective primes at the same time, nor did they both have great teams at the same time. So any direct comparison is spotty at best. Much easier to compare Larry with Magic. I love both MJ and Larry, but this type of head-to-head comparison doesn't really work.
