TLDR; Vista was good to me. I'm not a normal computer user, and I doubt many watching this channel are, but I ran Vista from Launch until Windows 8.1 came out as my primary "windows" OS (I ran Linux as my primary daily OS from before Vista, until well after the launch of Win10 , and I've been back and forth since Win10 came out). I never had half the issues with Vista that I had with Windows XP. With XP I had to format my HDD every 6 months and reinstall, so it would keep working (much better than windows 95, which was reformatted every 45-75 days, and Windows ME which required reformatting every 3-5 months). I was also running a high end CPU (I have no idea what, but I was using something from AMD and either the top end model or the one below the top end model with regular upgrades), not less than 16GB of RAM (I had 32GB most of the time I used Vista), at least 5 HDDs installed, and 2 CD/DVD burners (CD or DVD depending on the system at the time, as I did a lot of hardware step ups during the Vista years), and some AMD GPU (couldn't tell you which, most likely current gen -1, one step below the top model from that generation) as those were the days when I was living with 2+ other people and spent more money or computer hardware, video games, and other gadgets than I did on food.

Of all the issues I've had with vista, the worst was there was at least one windows update that would while installing break windows update making it impossible to uninstall said update or install any additional updates past that. I had several friends that got this update and had to watch their friends slowly get issues fixed as new updates came out while trying to decide weather it was worth reformatting setting everything up all over again just to get the latest updates.

I was at Best Buy looking at a Vista PC, meanwhile, a salesperson was trying to sell this couple another Vista PC, and there was this 3rd Vista PC nearby all by itself and all of them crashed within seconds of each other. Explain that if you can. Frankly, after that, I waited until Win 7 came out before getting myself a new PC.

Seems like MS Operating systems alternate between awesome and sucks - something like this. 3.11 awesome, 95 sucks, 98 awesome, ME sucks, XP Awesome, Vista Sucks, 7 Awesome, 8 sucks, 10 awesome... I think they know this and sticking to a good one and are just incrementally updating now. That plus SaaS coming anyway

My old PC had an annoying bug that somehow made it impossible for me to install Service Pack 1. No matter what I did, I could install every update up to SP1, and then it just stopped installing the updates. Imagine a desktop running pre-SP1 Vista. It was horror.

Microsoft had deals with almost all laptop vendors for them to come preinstalled with Vista. I have fixed soooooo many laptops loaded with this garbage that slowed them to a crawl. And the driver issues...OMG! It was an absolute nightmare. I talked to the CEO of Microsoft in my country. Blunt as I am I told him it was a piece of shit. It felt good and he (in his role) deserved the unbridled truth.

I love Vista. I still have a desktop HP running it and it's faster than any of my other machines. Aside from the "code purple" error I got about 3 years ago which resulted in HP paying for shipping and replacing a few parts for free, I've not had another issue with Vista Home Premium. I use it almost every day for off-line work, since MS and Windows and Google and Chrome all dropped it like hot brick. I have never had to defragment this machine! And I've had it since 2009. I still prefer it over 7, 8, XP & 10.

Vista was a trainwreck. Plain and simple. Linus is absolutely right when he said by the time Vista was fixed enough to be worth using, 7 was already out and running better than Vista ever did. I actually still use Windows 7. It just works. Microsoft got basically everything right with 7. (And cuz fuck 8 and 10. Can't stand them.)

When I had vista I didn't even have all that great of a computer but it ran great for me... I had a quad core 920 black edition AMD processor, 4 gigs of DDR2 corsair ram, and a PNY 9600 GT. Far from fantastic specs although I guess it was a little better then the usual off the shelf computers. I never had any issues with it. I always turned the account control feature off so it never bothered me. Everything transitioned great. I was very skeptical at first going from XP to vista but the look and feel was amazing vs XP. Was definitely more modern.

People don't know the horror of windows vista upgrade. That thing came just short of totally bricked my dad's machine, you would go into the driver manager and nothing would be there. He eventually got Microsoft to send him a full copy of vista because there was no way for him to reformat with the upgrade disk. I still think it was a bit his fault though, he decided to upgrade day one instead of waiting 6 months like I did. Even still I wanted to go back to XP but there was no way to play crisis on my new gaming PC.

Thank You Linius for acknowledging the Windows ME launch as the worst launch. The only thing that I liked about ME is that I could easily bypass the product key copy protection by booting it in safe mode and modify a registry key to trick the setup into thinking that a product key had already been entered. (yes I'm a rebel). Other then that ME was terrible.

7:50 KDE on linux was able to do all those features (transparent blurry windows, desktop effects using alt+tab, etc) using way less resources than Windows Vista did, and way before Windows did, and even more. the problem with Vista is that they used vectors to represent objects on the desktop, Windows 7 uses the same principle that KDE uses, Desktop layers, the difference is that KDE can actually vectorize those layers.

Gadgets are pretty handy. I use win7 and have CoreTemp and GPUobserver gadgets on my 3rd monitor. I can monitor my GPU temps, fan speed, gpu memory usage, while at the same time looking at CoreTemp which shows everything from CPU temps to system ram usage to percentage per core of usage while playing a game or doing whatever else on the main screen. I liked vista, and everything worked perfectly fine with my old s939 4200+ x2 setup. I never had a single problem with it except for it recognizing some really old printers. As long as your setup wasnt a decade old it was fine. I turned all of those permission nags off. It is about the same thing as win7, my fav MS OS that I still use for gaming and all. Windows Media Center was great.. CableCard DVR in my comp. Cant live without it now. Part of the reason why I dont switch to win10. Bad move MS for getting rid of it! Win ME was the worst Windows ever IMO

I remember doing an upgrade installation for my old XP system. It worked amazingly. When I later tried to make a fresh install it wouldn't work since there was no drivers for the motherboard chipset (nvidian nforce3 i think.. nforce4 was supported). It did work however with the old XP drivers when upgraded. Anyways I got new components Asus MB Core2 E6600 and 8800GTS 4Gb DDR2. With those components Vista just as good as Win7 which I later on upgraded to the same setup. Many who had Vista had way too low specs in their PC... so for low spec PC's XP was much better choice.Windows7 was made lighter compared to Vista so it functioned a bit better with lower specs but at the same time of course PC power was going up so the lower spec became mid range etc.

Vista was good, professional was good, even windows 98 was good. but the NSA forced them to load their crap to spy on people and develop(under-develop) ultimately the weirdo Windows 10. You gotta break the OS and make it a clunker needing updates in order to install NSA updates. Also that Jackass Steve Balmer mismanaged Microsoft working for apple.

10:46 what was at the time a high end system.... This is the key i run win 7 on a 2007 laptop it cannot run properly windows vista basic (that it came with) but heck it runs same as win7 win 10... Win vista and 8 should be in the same bag the attempt to go fwd but stay baried, both were bad but we could not get the good ones without. In all fairness win vista was not that bad but frustrating as it demanded resources that not everyone had...or could afford...

Good to see the history and acknowledgement that the release along with the lack of driver support was a fundamental flaw in Vista's rollout and led to it's black eye reputation. I had many people come to me shortly after they'd bought PC's with Vista in '07 complain it didn't work. I looked them in the eye and told them I couldn't really help them. Third party hardware and drivers don't exist for your system as of yet. With your system you're just going to have to hang in there until the device's manufacturer releases drivers. That made them so angry. A thousand dollars for a system that didn't work, I didn't blame them. I kept my father on XP until 2014, then finally upgraded him to Windows 7. Silly Microsoft. They have to make a big giant mess before they learn from it.

The only "bad" things about Vista were during launch. Buggy drivers get updated. Performance and resource usage catches up. Back when Service Packs were a thing, almost everyone in the know would tell you to wait until SP1 before updating to any Microsoft operating system. Really, the only jarring changes were the introduction of User Account Control and the new Aero skin.

Windows Vista has an issue with PC builders. They were releasing under powered laptops and PC's with too little ram, slow processors and it gave people a bad taste in their mouths performance wise. AKA what they still do today, just not as severely.
