If canada quit producing oil, the price of oil would go up, thus the price of plastic would go up, thus less plastic. Don't be hypocritical Canada!

Here in Oregon, USA cities are banning the plastic shopping bags. It is a step in the right direction. We use reusable grocery bags and one chain we shop at 'WINCO' gives you 6 cents back for each reusable bag you bring in. Bulk sections of stores need some work as you cannot use your own containers.

TMI warning! there garbage was so little, so then what does she do during her period?, use a rag?, I mean I just had a baby in January, all the pads I’ve used since then have filled 3 trash bags because I’ve bled so much. And every period I’ve had have been about the same. Because they have always been heavy.

The key is using biodegradable wrapping and bags. That way, the food will not be negatively affected and it will disintegrate much better.

If we could make companies responsible for the waste they generate, they'd have to consider it, but since a lot of people are scrimping just to get food for the week, they do what's cheapest. Cheap = plastic. I hope that cellulose that you touted becomes a cheap alternative, so at least the packaging we do use can be compostable

The plastic indicates that the food has somehow been altered from its original form with additives like flavoring or preservatives. Foods without plastics are actual foods. Plastic wrapped goods are "food products".

This is so much like a series that was broadcast on Australia's ABC called "War on Waste". We have recently had our largest supermarket chain stop supplying single use plastic checkout bags (which is legislated in a number of states). It's a step .

so there's the complaints about the mandarins not coming in paper boxes anymore but in plastic mesh bags. But have you actually staked out a store that had the paper boxes of mandarins? Or Oranges? People literally steal them. They take some out from another box and stuff it into another box and take the overstuffed box home, therefore stealing the mandarin oranges. Now I only see them in mesh bags, so thank your fellow customers for forcing the retailer to switch to mesh bags because some people can't be honest and try to steal. Cashiers are now counting every box to make sure people aren't stealing mangos. They'll be the next go go in a mesh bag. Thankfully they are easy to count at 9 per box.

Recycling is a waste of time and effort. Only a small percentage actually makes it to an actual recycling sorter. From there, the majority of it is sent to China (who's currently changing its policy.) THIS is when poorly managed plastic goes into the oceans. Properly run landfills are often covered over with golf courses or neighborhoods. Finally, many small municipalities welcome landfills and job creators.

The clip at the end of the woman who had a coconut wrapped in EPS netting for a cushion, then wrapped in plastic was disgusting. What kind of distorted thinking is it that causes someone to say, "Yeah, this hard shelled coconut that can withstand hits by rocks and some hammers definitely needs a cushioning wrap and extra layers of plastic to protect it."? Adding the cost of the plastic and the labor to wrap it increases the cost of the product by more than the actual cost of the plastic material and labor because the store adds a markup to those costs. The margin % may be the same, but because it is applied to a higher cost, it produces a larger amount of profit. I guess that explains the real reason for the extra packaging - increasing profits. As long as a store can make more profit by using extra packaging, they will. It will continue until shoppers stop buying from the stores that do this.

I wish people could live zero waste. I took some steps and some easy swaps. But to be honest. I live in UK and this amazing shop is a small exception. Go Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose or any other store and you will see exactly the same plastic there. England, you can do much better. People, go to Eastern Europe and check that out. So much less plastic

But.. some people who are disabled need plastic. If they have limited dexterity and cant peel an orange or slice an apple so pre packaged snacks allow them to still enjoy those things. Plastic straws are necessary for some people. I know people are going to attack me for pointing this out. But it's important to remember that the majority of plastic waste is fishing nets. Puting the blame on small consumers when big corporations are more responsible is ridiculous.

This is great to raise awareness of. We can effect change. Supermarkets need to address the waste produced by their operations. Plastic and food waste are major issues. I would also like to see CBC use their power as an advertiser of products to only advertise products or companies that are proving they reduce waste

One thing I've done working with an environmental education program is hold a "Plastic Turkey Contest". If you're going into a school (or even with a group of adults), you present the group with about six products and ask them to vote on which product has the most excessive plastic packaging. The product with the most excessive plastic packaging "wins" the contest. You take a photo of the product with the plastic turkey (which you can make from discarded plastic materials - an empty detergent bottle, etc.) and the students (or adults), and send the photo with letters from all who voted to the company that produces that product. We were doing this over 20 years ago, and it helped raise awareness about plastic packaging in a fun way.

wouldn't it be cheaper for stores and companies to put less packaging on their products? It might not be much for one package but every cent ads up. So even the most greedy companies should be using less. Also as more and more people try to use less plastic it would be more profitable to them. I'm just trying to think from a greedy prospective because a lot of coma pies are like that.
Trinity Nickel
Trinity Nickel 14 दिन पहले
They are getting mad at the packaging on the eggs and stuff but you can use an egg carton, milk carton, and many more containers more than once. It is way more responsible to put plastic into re-usable things that using it as film so yeah. you could cut a bit of the egg carton off and use it for things like soap, paint, or other liquids and use the rest as a container for bigger things. you could cut a milk container in half and use one half as a funnel and the other as a holder. Just some examples but there are probably 1000 more.
Trinity Nickel

If we do completely stop using plastic we will still have what is here now. In the far (or not so far) future we could put the garbage on an un-inhabited planet like Mars. Because why would it need to be plastic free. Also it would be interesting to see any changes that might happen on a planet that is not ours. But of course the best thing would be that we are able to recycle everything.

plastic wrapped food prevents the transmission of bacteria , microroganisms, and illness. if the foods aren't wrapped they wiil get contaminated. i am so sick of a small fringe of environmentalists dictating their views and policies on every body else. i will gladly buy groceries in paper bags ; stores could easily go back to paper bags. but don't try and tell me that most consumers want to buy exposed foods that aren't wrapped. particularly meat and dairy. don't tell me that you just didn't consider the extreme environmental view because most of my family, friends, and associates do not want buy contaminated exposed unwrapped food.

I try going plastic free in my food shopping but it's really difficult when you have a serious allergy. I have coeliacs and everything is plastic wrapped, and because most people don't buy gluten free they're not going to be getting rid of the plastic anytime soon. Also bakeries aren't popular in my country, and for coeliacs it has to be a completely gluten free bakery if I can eat or not. Hurry up world!

All this plastic is annoying in the house as well. It takes up so much fridge space and all those plastic bags are a pathetic way to transport produce. Absolutely no protection from the elements and if one of those plastic containers tear through the plastic bag, you're screwed. In NY, they tried banning plastic twice. And twice, they were petitioned against it by the citizens! Like Wtf?! If they make A biodegradable plastic like container, that would save so much money in the long run. They don't realize that all this trash is stifling the earth. Eventually we will choke the earth with all that plastic and eventually it will stop being able to produce vegetation because plastic creates a sterile growing area. You'd have to wait up to 350 years when the plastic starts to show signs of decomposition to even hope to grow anything in that area. In northern India, they banned plastic bags to the point that you can't even buy them in lieu of paper or fabric. They reuse fabric rice bags as carry bags. This is the saddest time to be A human. We are so disconnected from our roots. Literally. We forget that without the earth, we also don't exist. We need to start respecting the planet on which we live. One day the earth will give up on us and begin to cleanse itself from toxins like humans. The earth will survive without us, but we cannot survive without the earth.
