Meanwhile, in Austria, they have a 'separate' bin or bag for plastics, tin, cardboard, paper, glass and food waste. The food waste goes for things like pig feed, the rest is recycled (all of which are collected individually), if you are found to be flouting the Eco laws, you will be fined. All other waste (like old furniture, TVs etc etc) you are charged for by kilo (and its not cheap), because it has to be broken down and recycled. Green waste, like grass cuttings, branches, cut down bushes, you can take to a green waste area, which is free, So the meaning is Re-use don't Abuse, you just have to educate the populous to separate their waste !

I am using many of the reusable methods as best i can hear in Ga. I also make my own cosmetics and house keeping products but it is so frustrating because the ingredients i need to make them still come in plastic or plastic lined cardboard. When i consider ordering items that are supposed to be more environmentally friendly online, it comes wrapped in plastic. Why not waxed bamboo or grass fiber products?

You know what next time I go to the store I'm bringing my own container. Certain items are not based on weight they have a base price so I'm calling their bluff. Also once someone said they don't have the way to weight my container. Why do they need it? They weight the cut food get the price and then put it in my container. It's not that f-ing hard!

Single consumer can do exactly nothing to protect our planet from waste, whole towns and cities of such people can do an insignificant amount of good, why? Because factories produce it in tones. It’s like chasing the train to catch up, but before you even run the whole route of it, it will double you and then triple, etc. Any waste-reduce program should be producers-focused. They should be finally made responsible, so they thought twice before they produce the next tone of key chains, mugs, stuffed toys, trainers or electronics. By the way, no waste house?! what she makes out of hygiene products? falafels? In London a single souvenir store every week makes very heavy ridiculous load of waste out of plastic, polysterene foam and boxes from stock deliveries instead of having simple policy of getting these back to the producer so he could reuse it.

Plastic packaging may be more environmentally friendly because they are efficient and reliable, using degradable material like paper not only uses more energy in production, but also in distributing! Also, increase the percentage of possible damage items during shipping, which may totally cancel their benefits to the environment.

Where does plastic come from people? petroleum Or oil. So it's really the oil companies that are making the $$$$$ in plastics. So it's almost impossible for stores to keep plastic out. I believe only about 33% is reused in the U.S. or even recycled.

I once put a "compostable" bag into my compost pile and it was still there 5 years later. That would never bio-degrade in a landfill. In Hawaii, they don't have plastic shopping bags. If you forget your reusables, they sell you one for $.50 and you have to ask for a straw in your drink, which is made of paper. Brilliant!

My husband makes packaging machinery for bottling factories, food, etc. This would DESTROY his business -- so I sent him this link & to think about getting ahead of what might be a trend - if they can make the machinery that can wrap food & drinks in something biodegradable or paper in bulk while still protecting products, then they can offer something unique. PROBLEM: esp in the USA, food comes from several states over to a single massive food processing/packaging center - plastic helps protect that food - I don't think we can change those factors
AdeleiTeillana
AdeleiTeillana दिन पहले
While individuals trying to curb their plastic consumption is admirable, to truly have a wide-scale effect, companies need to get in on it, value the Earth over profits and change their packaging or products. The average consumer isn't going to go out of their way, spending extra time, extra money, extra gas driving to various grocers, etc. This is especially true for those on a strict budget. I read a great article about a year ago from an Australian source that showed how impossible it was there (in Australia) to completely avoid buying plastic. They went into great detail about certain products, where not one item could be found that didn't have some sort of plastic in the packaging or the product itself. They concluded that for there to be true change, it needs to be on a wider level - government regulations, companies taking responsibility, etc. I think this is true. Obviously we have to continue doing what we can as individuals, but to really make a dent in this problem, governments and companies need to get in on it.

The truth however, is that shops sell more by wrapping it in fixed packaging. They want you to buy a kilo of carrots instead of two single ones. However, we as customers want the best price. If we use the entire kilo, we WILL save money. Why, you say, when you only need two carrots? The plastic packaging keeps the carrots fresh waaaaaay longer than other wrappings. No, the problem is not that we use plastic. The problem is that we don't have a good system of handling the waste. Plastic actually prevents food waste big time, all we have to do is start recycling it, even though there's little or no money in it. That's why the government needs to support the recycling plants, and the suppliers need to start using recycled plastic.

The Queensland government in Australia recently banned all single use shopping bags. They also banned single use biodegradable bags as well, because even though it is biodegradable animals can still get tangled in it, mistake it for food. Even though it looks like plastic, feels like plastic but isn't plastic doesn't mean that it is completely fine for the environment because it will break down.

Living zero waste is great for your own self worth but it doesnt make a difference. We need universal laws for these multi million companies most of the packaged food in the world is owned by handfull elite supliers. And local laws where composting is forced, plastic waste is fined and every city has an x amount of local farmers governements need international pacts against poluting other cuuntries. We aren't going to achieve anything without strict rules and laws. I dont understand why the governements dont do this? Its so easy for them to controle and reinforce and fining could even earn national funds. We cant keep going like this for very long.

LOL let talk about money. It has a lot to do with how much you want to spend or not spend. Its the same reason why the narrative states "Land fills dont recycle your plastic because their is no money in it." LOL Even if you are responsible the company might still just throw it into a landfill. Money, money, money.

THe worst thing is there is an easy solution to plastics , but the oil companies won’t let you know about it because it would cost them way to much. The answer: Corn syrup . It can be used for everything throw away plastics like straw, grocery and garbage bags, also many other used and it is 100% biodegradable in time . Plastic lasts forever and doesn’t break up in water like Ron Syrup would. #WeAreTheChange

On a personal level: Reduce, reuse, recycle. Recycling should be the last option. First, reduce your waste, reuse it including composting to donating, then recycle it if you can. But on a corporate level: demand that the companies you purchase from have policies in place to make a difference, or go somewhere else. Hit them where it hurts the most, the pocketbook. People think "I'm only one person, what does buying less at Loblaws mean if it's just me". If everyone thinks about reducing their waste, they will see a difference and make changes.

Ive looked everywhere in Superstore (Loblaws), Walmart, Shoppers, etc. to purchase cloth bags for produce... they do not sell this. I would have to purchase it online for like $30 plus shipping for around 3-5 bags, I would like to be able to purchase these in store. I want more bulk options, I want plastic free packaging (especially redundancies), and I want counters to be fully trained on how to handle re-usable packaging with their scales.

However they are too made of plastic. I've been thinking of getting sheer cotton or linen and making my own produce bags.

There should be a way that people can bring their own containers to get the products from the supermarkets. Like if you want milk or almond milk there should be a dispenser that can put the amount of milk you want in your own personal milk bottle. Maybe there will be more eco-friendly ways to collect goods from the market.

THANK YOU, CBC Marketplace, for this! I've been pretty much mortified when shopping these days -- ever since my local waste collection & recycling program had to stop accepting almost all plastic. I used to carefully wash & recycle EVERYTHING I had. My blue bags were chock full, and my "actual garbage" bin only went out to the curb once a month or so, and even then, only half full. NOW, I'm having to put it out every second week, and my blue bag is half-full, because nothing else is recyclable. I'm desperately trying to stop buying anything in clamshells, but that means I don't get to buy berries at all, no spring mix salads, among other things. Almost all specialty bakery goods are in clamshells, and even if I buy in the box-board paper, it's not recyclable because you can't get all the food off, and my municipality won't accept it in the paper recycling, nor will they accept it in the green organics (compostables) bin because it's laminated paper. It's FRUSTRATING. From the store's standpoint, I think that they think that consumers don't want stuff that other people have touched, but that's what washing stuff is for (and wrapping coconut is just ridiculous!). I HATE that mushrooms come in those plastic things because water condenses in them which rots the mushrooms much more quickly than in a paper bag. I wish that the UK store could come here for me to buy from them (I bet the downtown lady in your story would have loved that, too! I LOVE that they have made their supplier use cellulose "plastic"! It's bloody brilliant, IMHO! I have posted this video on Sobey's facebook page, asking them to try to reduce the crazy amounts of plastic they're wrapping stuff in. Personally, I'd be happy going back to the days where the meat department wrapped their stuff in paper (but NOT laminated with plastic -- lined with veggie-based cellulose!). That said, I am guilty of using a FoodSaver for freezing meat, but I'm having to take it out of the store's plastic & styro packaging in order to vacuum-seal it. If it was in cellulose-lined butcher paper, I could put that into my organics bin. Thanks again, CBC for an awesome episode!!
