While mirrorless cameras have been rising in popularity since at least 2013, driven in large part by Sony's A7 and Panasonic's GH cameras, this past year feels like the start of this camera format becoming dominant. Both Nikon and Canon, the last major manufacturers to avoid the full-frame mirrorless market, released feature-packed cameras complete with radically new designs and lens mounts, and we've seen ambitious new models from Fujifilm and Panasonic that bring features not before seen in DSLRs. Traditional DSLRs aren't going anywhere for a while, but expect to see more and more mirrorless designs from all these companies.

Sorry, mirrorless cameras are not taking over the place of DSLRs. Poor battery life, poor AF, poor startup with burst mode and most importantly; the size and weight difference with the lenses on are nominal. No, I'm not going to part with my old horses because the new ones lack horsepower!

Well explained, since the mirrorless is continously improving, I will for the longer now stick to my slr.

I will, because I have a lot of great lenses native to the system, both old and new. But you know, I am one of those old fashioned people who cares about the pictures more than about the gear. I did buy a portable studio flash recently though, with a couple of good light formers. Because lighting is even more important than lenses. But, as I said, I have my priorities. Weird, isn't it?

who wins in big enlargements? is that just a factor of megapixel or does mirrorless w/ a higher MP count surpass DSLR output in larger format printing?

The Exakta came in 1936 so I guess 83 years is more correct. ... but if you count in the SLR-ish designs of some late 19th century large-format cameras (Graflex etc). you will have like 130 years.

Mirrorless... really great.... until you have to do multiple lens swaps in a very snowy, rainy or dusty environment. DLSR is a bit better for that kind of situation because your sensor has a little bit of protection.

The camera does not matter, it is only a tool. A person can measurebate all day but in the end it really does not matter. The first thing you should consider is "is it worth it?" Usually it is not. Both technologies have matured to the point that it isn't the equipment, but rather the person that is the biggest limitation. Don't obsess, just get what you can afford and go shoot photos. Great video though, really covered the points of both

Why? Marketing to sell cheap products at expensive prices, just marketing. It turns out that from this moment the DSLR cameras only have and have had defects since they were created (that is what some youtubers want to make us believe) and the mirrorless are the great technological marvel. I have a DSRL and a mirrorles and for motorsport the mirrorless I leave it stored in my house, I only use it when I record video.

slr's being king for 100 years??????? WUT? dude, you people need to know your facts before making a video. in 1919 (100 years ago) SLR cameras were still just a fancy novelty camera. they didnt actually start gaining in popularity until the late 1930's and into the 1940's. that alone makes every part of your video and opinion on cameras INVALID since you clearly dont know about photography and cameras.....

In the lab there is this large contraption for extreme closeup photos of insect specimens, so you can see individual hairs on a fly for example. It also automatically stitches photos from many depths of field together so no part of the image is out of focus. Downsides being it is old, huge, not portable, can only photograph stationary subjects, and takes forever to take all the necessary photos. I can't wait till this tech is polished, streamlined, and made portable!

you dont need an accordian to hunt with unless you are hunting for bavarian woman! but if you want ACCURATE control over your image that you are making with a camera you NEED a mirror instead of a digital display. digital displays are not fully trustworthy.

Im just not ready for mirrorless yet. They keep upgrading to quickly. Maybe once they have stabilized in technology. If you bought a mirrorless 8 months ago, its already outdated as some newer model with a huge increase in technology has already been put out.

I'm a mirrorless (fujifilm) amateur photographer. Another advantage of the DSLR is the battery life. The constant need of a display draws a lot of energy, we mirrorless photographers must always carry a couple of spare batteries.

I watched this video because I was thinking one of the biggest advantages to mirrorless is that you can see your exposure and depth of field on the back of the camera which could help to eliminate a bunch of dumb mistakes that you might miss looking through the viewfinder on a DLSR. I've messed up some otherwise great shots over these dumb mistakes. Was this not covered in the video or did I miss it?

Even after watching this, you seem overall quite biased. DSLR all the way. Mirrorless is a just a fad. I hate people going around saying we should all switch to a worse system.

Nice video and explanation. Few things: as big sensor cameras you list fullframe, but a few seconds later you show mirrorless medium format cameras :-D The other thing is that you forget one really huge advantage of mirrorless over SLRs: you can literally focus into the edges, whereas SLRs system rarely go far above the center area. And finally: on an EVF you can see the final image already in the viewfinder before you take it, including things like white balance and exposure applied and so can correct things before pressing the shutter. (Of course only when no flash lighting is involved)

Versions of this opinion have been offered since the SLR camera was first introduced. The viewfinder mirror adds to an already complex camera body. The mirror increases cost. The mirror decreases reliability send can break. The mirror adds vibration to the mechanism. The camera can be smaller/lighter/*slimmer without the mirror. (*slimmer depends on using a different lens set with a closet focal plane). The original advantage was getting a view with the same focal length and internal reflections that would appear on film. In the digital era the advantage of an optical viewfinder is that the in-camera or on-camera display doesn’t have enough resolution and image quality, it’s somewhere along the road to a low res posterized version of the image. Even if it did, it isn’t able to show what they eye can see will be available after image processing. And if it did that, in low light it can’t see the detail the flash will capture. I think there will also remain a group that prefer an optical viewfinder and no degree of improvement to the in-viewfinder display can change that. The counterpoints to the disadvantages were always that some cost in price and size is unavoidable for the advantages, and it has to be conceded that a buyer looking for cheap small and light won’t be buying a camera is this class with or without a mirror. Hobby photographers have been trading size/weight/performance for more than 40 years. Reliability is a red herring, the other mechanicals required to take the shot dominate the repairs. That used to mean for professional photographers that the shutter fails 1st, then the F-stop step down, then the film door, the shutter release, and rarely if ever the mirror. Autofocus drive autoexposure f-stop drive and power zoom drive took the 1st place away from the mechanical shutter. The mirror is still a non-factor. In the end a camera is a discretionary purchase priced by demand not cost so manufacturers will prefer to sell the camera with the lower cost. Reviewers who reflect their interest will be offered the opportunity to review products before they hit the retailers. Reviewers who don’t can shelve the article and write something else, but writing a critical review will get the reviewer pushed down on the manufacturers pecking order. Very few individuals and organizations can do that more than occasionally without losing access.
